My fellow co-leaders Lori Dobrin, Mike Strauss, and I have a very special guest speaker at the next meeting of the Ventura/Santa Barbara Counties Professional Development Group! We have the honor of welcoming a dear friend and colleague,Professor Stephanie Blondell, from the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University Caruso School of Law, onMonday, March 18th at 6 p.m.
Professor Blondell, recipient of the 2021 SCMA President's Award and 2023 SCMA L. Randolph Lowry Award, will be giving a presentation and leading a discussion on "How to Ask Questions When You Disagree". What is the most underutilized skill as a mediator? Asking questions. They build relationships and deepen trust. So if questions are the answer, why don't we ask them? This presentation and discussion explores a very specific skill that has a technical difficulty of a "10." How to ask questions when you disagree with someone and maintain rapport? This is a reflective session that leaves participants with a deeper understanding of how to unleash one of the most powerful mediator tools.
For those of you who don't know Professor Blondell, she is a Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Straus Institute. Professor Blondell also directs the Straus Mediation Clinic and is a lead faculty for the Women's Negotiation Academy and teaches Mediating the Litigated Case domestically, and internationally. Prior to joining the Pepperdine community, Professor Blondell served as the Manager of the King County Alternative Dispute Resolution Program and Interlocal Conflict Resolution Group, a labor-management and public policy mediation program serving a tri-county region in Seattle. Professor Blondell also served as the Alternative Dispute Resolution Coordinator for the City of Seattle where she designed and implemented an employment mediation program for the City government in a joint labor-management context. Professor Blondell was also the Court and Program Manager for the Dispute Resolution Center of King County, managing the mediation activities of twelve divisions of the district court.
Professor Blondell has also served as an adjunct faculty at Seattle University School of Law and as an affiliate associate professor at the University of Washington, Evans School Masters in Public Administration, teaching Strategic Negotiations. Prior to entering the field of mediation, Professor Blondell practiced criminal defense and was a research attorney for the Federal Public Defender for the Western District of Washington.
This is a presentation and discussion not to be missed! Again, our next meeting will be held via Zoom on Monday, March 18th at 6 p.m. We really look forward to having many of you join our next PDG meeting and participating with our fellow SCMA members!
