For our September meeting, the Westside PDG will be discussing the topic of venting. If we were to poll the entire SCMA community, we believe the majority of mediators would say that they are not opposed to providing the parties in their mediations the opportunity to vent. The conventional wisdom is that by doing so, we're giving the parties the space to "blow off steam," be heard and have their thoughts and emotions be acknowledged. But, what would we say if we were told that according to some academics and professionals in other fields, such as psychology, venting is not only useless, it actually causes more harm than good for the person?
