We hope you’re all well and enjoying the blooming jacaranda (or at least avoiding parking underneath them).
For the Westside PDG's May meeting, we’ll be discussing the war in Ukraine and mediation, particularly with regards to mediating with Putin. We'll touch on an array of questions, including whether one can or should mediate/negotiate with someone perceived as untrustworthy and "evil," especially when the world is still haunted by appeasement and the disastrous 1938 Munich Agreement with Hitler. Is there a time/conflict when one should fight "no matter what?" At what point are the costs too great? Do you think you'd be able to mediate between Ukraine and Russia, or is the hurdle of neutrality/omni-partiality too difficult to overcome? As a mediator, have you ever faced the concern of doing more harm than good?
We anticipate a very lively and engaging conversation that will hopefully open our minds and challenge our views.
