About the Moderator & Panelists:

Lynette Kim

Lynette Kim has been a family law attorney for 25 years and resolving divorce conflict is at the heart of her practice. She is dedicated to assisting her clients to disentangle the legal and emotional issues in their divorce through education and problem solving and use mediation to accomplish this. She believe's that mediation should be the primary way to handle legal disputes in California and beyond. 

Her volunteer activities in the past and present include working as a settlement officer for the Los Angeles Superior Court's Daily Settlement Officer program; a committee member of the LACBA's Project's Inc. on its domestic violence project; a volunteer attorney for LACBA's domestic violence prevention program; a board member of the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles; and a mediator with the Southern California Family Mediation focused on dependency mediation.  

 

Leyla Balakhane
 
Leyla Balakhane is a distinguished and experienced mediator, facilitator, coach, and trainer who specializes in highly-charged divorce and family mediation. Leyla is a passionate mediator who has always felt drawn to help others navigate conflicts and advocate for children who will inevitably shape our society.
 
Every child deserves to have a happy, safe and loving home environment and Leyla is committed to helping make that a reality.
 
Leyla is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association (LACBA) Arbitration Panel, a Certified Practitioner of the Academy of Professional Family Mediators (APFM), and trains of a wide range of range of professionals in the field of family law mediation in SCMA’s Professional Development Group for Family Law by the Southern California Mediation Association.
 
Leyla’s extensive experience as a mediator is not only utilized with families, but has also prepared her to provide training in mediation at various universities and professional organizations. She is an expert in the field of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), and her approach to divorce is effective, compassionate, and economical.
 
Leyla serves as a mentor for the mediators at Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Court where she trains mediators and resolves Juvenile dependency disputes such as shared parental responsibility, termination of parental rights, and adoption disputes.
 
Leyla empowers her clients to explore options that are tailored toward the specific needs of their families. She helps her clients shape their family’s future, explore the best possible outcomes, negotiate appropriate compromises, and directly participate in the decision-making process.
 
Having considerable knowledge and a keen sensitivity to cross-cultural issues, Leyla’s approach to mediation encourages empathy and understanding to get to the heart of the conflict. She responds directly to the needs of each spouse and is mindful that every family is unique.
 
Leyla is praised for alleviating grievances that can often come with a separation and she encourages parents to commit to strengthening their relationships. Through mediation, the family will be supported using a cooperative approach that allows parents to collaboratively reconcile the prospect of continued teamwork and positive communication while also tending to the best interests of their children.

Chip Rose

Chip Rose has been the Director of the Mediation Center in Santa Cruz, California and certified as a Specialist in Family Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.  Chip maintained private practices in Mediation and Collaborative Practice in Santa Cruz, California prior to retiring in 2018.

Chip is recognized nationally and internationally as an innovator and expert in the field of mediation and collaborative conflict resolution.  He is a founding Board Member and the immediate past President of the Academy of Professional Family Mediators (2015-2016) and previously was a member of the Board of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals (IACP), the first international organization in the field of Collaborative Practice.  An adjunct faculty member of the Strauss Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law, he teaches workshops in basic and advanced mediation and Collaborative Practice.  Chip is the author of The Collaborative Law Practice; The Creative Solution column in the quarterly Family Section Newsletter of the Academy of Professional Family Mediators (APFM); the chapter, “Mediating Financial Issues”  in Divorce and Family Mediation: Models, Techniques and Applications edited by Jay Folberg; and co-authored the chapter “Psychology and Divorce” in The Financial Handbook of Divorce, edited by Crumbley and Apostolou.  Since 1994, Chip has also been providing training throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom in the theory and application of Mediation and Collaborative Practice.

 

Laurie Itkin

Laurie Itkin is a financial advisor, wealth manager, and certified divorce financial analyst (CDFA). She serves on the national board of directors for the Association of Divorce Financial Planners. She is also the author of the Amazon best-seller, Every Woman Should Know Her Options: Invest Your Way to Financial Empowerment. Through her company, The Options Lady, she provides divorce-related financial planning and analysis to individuals and couples throughout all stages of the divorce process and has worked on over 270 divorce cases either as a financial neutral or advocate to one spouse.Ms. Itkin has appeared as a guest expert on investing and financial aspects of divorce on television, radio and podcasts. She has been quoted in numerous publications including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, San Diego Union Tribune,  and Chicago Tribune. Ms. Itkin volunteers as a pro-bono financial planner for the San Diego Financial Literacy Center and Savvy Ladies. She earned her B.S. in economics with a concentration in finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

 

 

Jenna Flowers PsyD, MFT

Jenna Flowers PsyD, MFT has a private practice in Newport Beach and is the Clinical Director of Mainspring Family Wellness offering counseling services and parenting classes. She offers an online course for coparenting called Coparentwell.com.  Her book The Conscious Parent's Guide to Coparenting is published by Simon and Schuster and can be found on Amazon and Barnes & Noble for purchase. Dr. Flowers is referred by various attorneys and mediators as a court appointed Coparenting Therapist in Orange County.  Dr. Flowers is also the co-host of Mainspring Family Wellness Podcast discussing all things parenting, all things family wellness. She herself is a coparent to 3 children ages 20, 13, 10 and a Bonus Mom to  1 son, age 15.
