Marlon Schulman & Anthony Farenga invite you to the 4th Virtual PDG session: “Fostering & Child Welfare: Practical Viewpoints from the Inside and Out," an interactive presentation & conversation with professionals who have lived through and worked in the child welfare system. "PDG Meetings are for SCMA Members only. However, Non-members may attend a total of two PDG events for FREE in order to experience this SCMA benefit."

Shinay Bowmanis a transformational leader who believes that leadership is not a title but a state of mind, heart and spirit required of any individual seeking to make replicable, scalable, and sustainable change. 

Mrs. Bowman has served in education for 20+ years as a middle school teacher, Academic Coach, Program Facilitator, Equity Program Specialist, Assistant Principal, Interim Principal, Program Manager providing professional learning, coaching and technical assistance in prevention and intervention programs like PBIS, Restorative Practices, and Social-Emotional Learning, in 14 school districts and over 200 schools across the county of San Bernardino. She currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for Upland Unified School District. Mrs. Bowman is a highly sought-after educational professional with a myriad of skills including a certified Asist Suicide Intervention Trainer, a licensed IIRP Restorative Practices Trainer, a SWIS trainer for student information systems, College Board Certified Curriculum Coach and Consultant, Implementation Scientist, and Equity Specialist. Mrs. Bowman truly believes that leaders must tap into the hearts and minds of those they serve and take a collective impact approach to ensuring that all means all when it comes to providing an exceptional and equitable educational experience for children. 

Sherri Sobel has been teaching, preaching, and “speeching” about child welfare for over thirty years. In private practice she represented children in special education hearings, juvenile justice, and appeals. She was a state special education mediator. As a juvenile court Referee, she presided over a court in the largest dependency system in the world. She started the education law clinic which is still representing children with special needs. She has been a guest Editor on many State publications and has spoken at or taught at many national Institutes and Conventions about education for foster children. She is the proud Bubbe of Bennet the perfect grandchild. 

 

The 2007 California Juvenile Court Judge of the Year, Ms. Sobel came out of retirement to lead the BEST Village as a movement leveraging key insights she has garnered over the course of more that 35 years as a child welfare advocate and Children's Court Bench Officer. 

 

“BEST Village”:  Bolstering Education & Successful Transition for students who have no family or home takes a Village of caring and quality relationships.  

 

Paul Freese has extensive experience in legal services, advocacy and systemic change to prevent and end poverty and homelessness. He has been a strong voice as a leader, speaker and writer shedding light on critical social issues such as, welfare reform, foster care, and homelessness. Paul hopes to bring to TGS valuable information on their housing rights to prevent homelessness. 

 

Stacey Lisk is a family mediator with over 15 years’ experience working with families, couples and youth and specializing in custody/visitation, post-adoption, parent/teen conflicts and elder care. 

In 2014 Stacey co-founded the volunteer mediator program, Southern California Family Mediation, providing mediation services in connection with the LA Superior Court dependency proceedings. 

In 2020, Stacey started Whole Family Mediation, Whole Family provides mediation and training for families who are experiencing conflict, who are recovering from trauma and who are committed to healing and reconciliation, as well as the professionals who work with them. We focus our efforts on foster youth, women and their families who are most impacted by mass incarceration, homelessness, poverty and injustice.
