On September 8, the Westside PDG will be having a facilitated interactive dialogue with Mark Baer about the pervasive nature of bias within each and every one of us and how that relates to ethics, professional competency, and emotional well-being. We will discuss bias within the legal field and its impact, specifically the biases harbored by the various players, such as the clients, attorneys, experts, mediators and judges. We will consider how bias compromises conflict and dispute resolution and explore what can be done to reduce and otherwise keep biases in check in ourselves and others.

The dialogue will be based upon Mark's article, The Amplification of Bias in Family Law and Its Impact, which can be found at the following link: https://cdn.ymaws.com/aaml.org/resource/collection/5DE1A830-8C19-463D-B8F0-CEF19DBDAF6F/MAT203.pdf

Mark works as a mediator, conflict resolution consultant, non-litigating family law attorney, and educator in Pasadena, California. He is a prolific writer of articles and contributions to several books. His article titled The Amplification of Bias in Family Law and Its Impact was published in the Bias Edition of the Journal of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers in May 2020. He recently joined BRDGES Academy’s faculty to teach Implicit Biases: Awareness and Management in Conflict Resolution to professionals working in conflict resolution. Mark’s writings on bias, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence have been published primarily in the Huffington Post and Psychology Today and have been widely cited.
