We invite you to a SCMA Professional Development Group for Family Mediators event. Please join us for a discussion that will enhance your understanding of mediation's role in social change.

Bernie Mayer, PH.D., has provided conflict intervention for families, communities, NGO’s, unions, corporations, and governmental agencies throughout North America and internationally for over 40 years. He is Professor Emeritus of Conflict Studies, Program on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution, Creighton University, and a founding partner of CDR Associates. Bernie’s newest book (with Jacqueline Font-Guzmán), The Neutrality Trap: from Constructive Engagement to Strategic Disruption in Social Conflict, was published in early 2022.  Previous books include: The Dynamics of Conflict, Beyond Neutrality, and Staying With Conflict, and The Conflict Paradox.

Overview: Dr. Mayer will discuss the challenges mediators and conflict interveners face in situations with significant power differentials between parties. He will share his insights from "The Neutrality Trap," focusing on the balance between maintaining neutrality and empowering all parties involved. This is particularly pertinent for those engaged in social change, examining the dual role of mediators as both agents of the status quo and necessary intermediaries in negotiation processes.
