Who We Are
SCMA’s mission is to nurture, expand, and develop the practice, profession, and community of mediation.
SCMA is the biggest professional mediator association in Southern California for those who provide mediation services or work in the area of conflict resolution.
Our members include full and part-time mediators, educators in conflict resolution, and professionals in a wide range of other specializations. Our members include both lawyers and non-lawyers.
We have a Mediator Directory where you can input a variety of information about your area(s) of expertise, your background, or any other information you want others to know about you for attracting business or making connections.
Keep an eye out for events on our calendar or emails that you will receive as part of our member listserv group for upcoming webinars, events, and PDG (Professional Development Group) activities.
Professional Development Groups (PDGs)
PDG's are member-led peer groups located throughout Southern California. PDGs connect SCMA members for the purpose of sharing, supporting one another, and staying up to date with current and ongoing developments in the mediation field. With our current environment, these groups have gone virtual, holding their sessions via the zoom meeting process. This has expanded the opportunity for our members to attend more of these rich discussions. Their sessions normally last from 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours and have a range of 12 to 45 in attendance. For more details on our PDGs click on this link .
We have been able to expand our offerings with through the expansion of online webinars. We have recorded those webinars and have them housed in our webinar library for our members to view (some have a small fee for purchase).
Family Mediation Institute
In 2020 we held our third annual institute focused on the family mediation field. It drew over 80 mediators and those who support family mediators during the event. In addition, we honored Forrest "Woody" Mosten with the inaugural Forrest "Woody" Mosten Star Award for Innovation and Excellence in family conflict resolution. This event has grown and developed each year.
Annual Fall Conference
This is our signature event held each year during the end of October or the beginning of November. We normally attract around 250 people for a full day of activities, typically starting off with a keynote speaker following by a variety of workshops geared to all levels of mediators. For the past few years, we have held this event at the LA Grand Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles. This year, like most other organizations, we are planning on holding this event in late October using a virtual platform.
Employment Mediation Institute
This has typically been an annual event, normally held in the summer at the USC School of Law building. Due to the current environment we were not able to hold it this year, but it will be back next year.
Networking is a very important aspect of all of our events and we continue this focus with an annual networking event which is FREE to all members. We convene in a casual atmosphere for members to meet new members and to reconnect with other members.
Kids Managing Conflict (KMC)
We partner with KMC as we support them in their efforts of teaching conflict resolution skills to our youth.
MC3We partner with MC3, an organization that provides mediator certification.
While we have a variety of offerings to fit all levels of experience, the best part is the people who make up our membership. Their openness to sharing, their wide range of experience, and their passion for the profession are truly inspirational.
